October and November Milestone Months for Smartphones

A survey released by consumer research firm NPD Group shows that October and November were game-changing months in the smartphone industry. Their data shows that in those two months, Android market share nosedived from 60% to 47% while Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS sales boomed, increasing their piece of the pie from 26% to 43%, nearly leveling the playing field. Cultofmac.com cites pent-up demand for the iPhone 4S due to Apple’s late announcement of the product as the major driver behind Apple’s surge.

NPD’s data also showed that the less popular operating systems showed no major changes.  Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), the maker of Blackberry, accounted for 6% of smartphone sales, down from a previous 8%. Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 7 phones stayed virtually flat.

Apple is the maker of the three most popular smartphone models, the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 3G. When Apple released the 4S, it also drastically reduced the price of its older models, helping them to maintain popularity with smartphone purchasers. Although NDP’s survey does not include data from the holiday season, recent data from Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Andy Rubin and Fortune indicates that the Apple iOS may have now overtaken the Android. Both sources’ data, however, included iPad and tablet activations, which makes the numbers imperfect.
