Research in Motion Watches Verizon and Sprint Customers Disappear

Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM), creators of the Blackberry, are seeing slowed momentum in sales against competition from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other smartphone companies.

Despite a strong release for Blackberry 7, RIM is feeling pressure from rivals like the iPhone 4S and Android 4.0 (NASDAQ:GOOG), which are beginning to take over RIM’s market with consumers at Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), T-Mobile, and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S). RIM is also looking at slowed sales for its PlayBook, which has been discounted in past weeks—possibly because it won’t provide basic features like email, calendar, and messenger for a year. Furthermore, IM looks at potential sales cuts abroad as Nokia (NYSE:NOK) preps overseas for the release of Windows Phone devices (NASDAQ:MSFT) in European markets.

Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said in a research note sent to clients, “We anticipate increasing competition across all tiers of RIM’s products in 2012.”
