Starbucks on the Cutting Edge of Mobile Payment Trend

Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) has just earned itself the tag of a mobile payment processor – since January it has processed more than 26 million mobile payments. The triggers for this have been mobile apps such as Android (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) that make payments for coffee a breeze. Interesting that Starbucks recognized the potential of apps and released its Starbucks mobile payment app – it cleaned up $110 million in money loaded onto Starbucks cards.

A likely new trend is emerging and it could be increasing consumer preference for using the mobile phone for more than just voice, music and what-have-you, junking the ubiquitous wallet.

But is Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) playing sourpuss? Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is aggrieved that VZ is blocking installation of its Google Wallet payment app on the hot new Galaxy Nexus smartphones, prior to launching its own mobile payment service named Isis.
