Study: iPhone Buyers Say ‘Yuck’ to Yellow, ‘Yes’ to Space-Gray

Source: cirpllc.comA new study from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners of Chicago revealed which of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPhone color options were the most popular over the first month of availability. While it’s no secret that Apple’s gold-colored iPhone 5S was big hit in Asia, the CIRP study revealed other interesting iPhone color preferences among consumers.

Apple offers the flagship iPhone 5S in three colors: space-gray, silver, and gold. Although the gold-colored iPhone 5S appeared to be the most popular flagship iPhone color based on anecdotal reports of shortages and high resale prices for the device on eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), it appears that the highest selling device was actually the space-gray model. According to CIRP’s study, the space-gray model accounted for 43 percent of the total iPhone 5S sales.

The silver iPhone 5S accounted for 30 percent of sales, while the rare gold iPhone 5S was a close behind with 27 percent of total iPhone 5S sales. Since the high resale prices for the gold iPhone 5S suggest that it still has the highest consumer demand, it appears that the gold iPhone’s lower sales are due to a supply shortage rather than a lack of popularity.

Source: cirpllc.comApple’s iPhone 5C is available in five colors: blue, white, green, pink and yellow. CIRP’s study found that blue was the most popular color overall with a 27 percent share of sales. On the other hand, yellow was by far the least popular color with only a 7 percent share of total iPhone 5C sales.

CIRP also broke down the popularity of the various iPhone colors according to gender. “IPhone 5S and 5C colors seem to confirm some traditional gender biases,” noted CIRP Partner and Co-Founder Mike Levin. “In the iPhone 5C, men prefer the neutral white, and the Space Gray in the iPhone 5S. In contrast, women prefer lighter silver 5S and the brighter iPhone 5C colors. Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the yellow iPhone 5C very much.”

However, some color preferences cut across gender lines. Apple’s gold-colored iPhone 5S was equally popular with both men and women, while the yellow iPhone 5C appeared to be similarly unpopular with both genders as well. While Apple declined to break its iPhone sales down by model or color in its recent quarterly earnings results, the Cupertino-based company revealed that it sold a record 33.8 million iPhones in this year’s September quarter.
