Study: Mobile Enterprise Users Prefer Apple’s iOS Over Google’s Android
A recent study conducted by mobile security solutions company Good Technology revealed that Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS is outpacing Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android in the mobile enterprise market for both smartphones and tablets. Good Technology’s report covered app, platform, and device preferences from more than 5,000 organizations in 130 countries during the second and third quarters of 2013.
According to Good Technology, app deployment among business users grew 42 percent quarter over quarter. Apple’s iOS accounted for the lion’s share of these app activations, with a 98 percent share in the second quarter and a 95 percent share in the third quarter.
Apple also led in total activations by platform, with a 69 percent and 72 percent share in the second and third quarters, respectively. “The slight decrease may be due to consumers holding off on iPhone device purchases in anticipation of new models, so it will be compelling to see what Q4 2013 brings now that new models have come to market,” Good Technology wrote.
Apple’s iOS net activation gains were mirrored by a corresponding dip in Google’s Android market share. Android only accounted for 30 percent of the total platform activations in the second quarter and 27 percent in the third quarter.
Apple also accounted for the majority of total activations by device. Apple’s iPhone accounted for a 51 percent share of total smartphone activations after slipping to 48 percent in the second quarter. Although Google’s Android increased its share of smartphone activations from the 21 percent it held in the first quarter, it still only accounted for 27 percent in the second quarter and 25 percent in the third quarter.
Apple’s total iPad activations decreased slightly from the 24 percent share it held in the first quarter to a 22 percent share in the third quarter. Meanwhile, total Android tablet activations dropped from 4 percent in the second quarter to 2 percent in the third quarter.
However, Apple’s iOS continued to dominate in enterprise tablet usage, accounting for an overwhelming 90 percent of total tablet activations in the third quarter. On the other hand, Google’s Android platform tablet activations fell from 16 percent in the second quarter to 10 percent in the third quarter.
Although Apple’s iOS already dominates tablet usage in enterprise, it may soon increase its share even more. Apple is widely expected to unveil the fifth-generation iPad and the second-generation iPad mini with Retina display at a media event scheduled for Tuesday.
