Study: Tremendous Concentration of ETF Volume in US Equities Trading

Abel/Noser is out with their newest Study looking at which US equities are trading the most volume. Here are some notable bullet points:

  • SPY (SPDR Trust Series 1) accounted for over 10% of the total domestic principal traded;
  • The cumulative volume of the top twenty equities, sorted by average daily principal traded, represent over 26% of domestic principal traded; and,
  • Once you reach just the 112th ranked symbol, you have accounted for over half of a day’s volume.

August’s top 6 most liquid equities and ETFs included: SPDR Trust Series 1, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), iShares Russell 2000 (IWM), Pwershares QQQ Nasdaq 100 (QQQQ), iShares MSCI Emerging Markets (EEM), and Bank of America (NYSE: BAC).
