The iPhone 6: Just How Different Could It Be?

Though Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5S hasn’t been out for too long, eager eyes and minds are already looking to the future of the iPhone with the newest concept design for the iPhone 6. According to TechnoBuffalo, Apple bought a patent for a phone with a wrap-around screen. Such a design would make for a more extensive use of the phone body, with a larger percentage of screen available for use.

“The consumer electronic product includes at least a transparent housing and a flexible display assembly enclosed within the transparent housing. In the described embodiment, the flexible display assembly is configured to present visual content at any portion of the transparent housing,” said Apple. Apple went on to call the housing “compelling,” and to note the different social media and music controls that could be put in place with such technology — if it was indeed put to use.

Now, following this purchase, imaginations are going wild. One designer based in Kazakhstan, Iskander Utebayev, has created a iPhone 6 concept design with a partial wraparound, according to Yahoo News. The design changes only the left portion of the phone body into part of the iPhone screen.

Flexible screens and rounded phones are not new, and Apple’s competitors Samsung (SSNLF.PK) and LG have both taken hesitant steps in that direction — though with nothing so bold as what tech enthusiasts are expecting from Apple. Samsung has it’s Galaxy Round with a somewhat curved screen.

Introducing a slightly curved cylindrically concave screen is a very important and major innovation in smartphone display technology — very far from being a marketing gimmick as has been widely reported,” states Raymond M. Soneira, the president of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation, according to a company release. Others disagree, but as much criticism as the Samsung Galaxy Round has received — with poor sales according to IntoMobile, LG hasn’t done much better. LG’s G Flex has understandable been dubbed the “banana” phone by BGR. “The LG G Flex is the best representation yet of how a smartphone should be curved,” said LG Mobile’s chief executive officer, Dr. Jong-seok Park.
