Will Samsung Overwhelm Apple With a Tidal Wave of Tablets in 2014?
Samsung (SSNLF.PK) will release many different sizes of tablets in various price ranges this year in the hopes of grabbing more market share from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), reports DigiTimes.
According to upstream supply chain sources cited by the Taiwan-based website, Samsung will “flood the tablet market” with multiple models in different sizes like 7-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch size tablets. Samsung’s tablets will be separated into three pricing ranges: the entry-level Lite series, the mainstream series, and the high-end Pro series, per DigiTimes.
Samsung’s tablet strategy appears to be similar to the approach that the Korea-based company took to the smartphone market. Apple’s biggest rival has long used its varied smartphone product line to attract more customers who are looking for different sizes of devices in various price ranges.
According to DigiTimes’ hit-or-miss sources, Samsung is hoping to attract budget-minded consumers by offering its new Galaxy Tab 3 Lite for only $129. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite will feature a 7-inch screen with a 1024-by-600 pixel display, a 1.2GHz Cortex A9 processor, 1GB of storage, and a 3-megapixel camera.
Apple’s 7.9-inch iPad mini with Retina display has a 2048-by-1536 pixel display, 16GB of storage, and a 5-megapixel iSight camera. However, Apple’s compact tablet also starts at $399. DigiTimes’ sources also noted that the average tablet price may fall below $100 in 2014. Samsung is able to keep its tablet prices relatively low thanks to its in-house production lines.
According to data from Digitimes Research, Apple’s iPads accounted for 50 percent of the worldwide tablet market in 2013, with 70.1 million units shipped. Second-ranked Samsung only shipped 33.9 million units in the same time period.
Although Apple has not revealed any plans to expand its line of iPads, multiple media outlets have reported rumors that Apple is planning on releasing a 12.9-inch tablet in 2014. The Korea Times said in November that the large-screen iPad is already being manufactured by a supplier in Korea and will feature a resolution “quality similar to that of UHD [ultra high-definition].”
