Will The iPad 5 Debut This Summer?
Without any major catalysts to get in the way, the rumor mill is free to grind out as much nebulous speculation about Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) as it pleases. Citing sources with Taiwan-based supply chain companies, DigiTimes reports that volume production of the fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad will begin in July or August of 2013.
For some context, Digitimes — a Taiwanese tech industry news site — has a pretty dubious record of accuracy, particularly when it comes to Apple rumors. The DigiTimes report compares against a widely-cited iMore report suggesting an April debut of the fifth-gen iPad.
The DigiTimes sources pointed out that the display for the new device will be supplied by LG Display (NYSE:LPL) and Sharp (SHCAY.PK). No real details were leaked, other than that it will be thinner and lighter than the previous generation, and will adopt a slim bezel design like the iPad mini.
The company’s software — particularly iCloud — has become increasingly important over the past few years. Most observers are not expecting iOS 7 to be released with the new iPad.
