Samsung (SSNLF.PK) maybe be ready to launch a new direct attack against Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad Mini. The Korean company has announced the Galaxy Tab 3, which has specifications and sizes very close to the iPad Mini.
The world’s biggest smartphone maker already has 2 iterations of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab, but it may not have been properly primed for the fierce level of competition brought by Apple. So, when Apple launched its only near-7-inch tablet, the Galaxy Tab 2 might not have been ready to compete.
However, Samsung has now had the chance to set up a suitable iPad Mini competitor, and that’s where the Galaxy Tab 3 comes into play. A close look at the differences in specifications between the two devices should give insights into how the two will fair in direct competition.
First, the brains of the devices — their processors — show the Galaxy Tab 3 coming out on top. The device is reported to have a 1.2-gigahertz dual-core processor, which compares to the iPad Mini’s 1-gigahert dual-core processor. It may not be a massive speed advantage, but it can’t go ignored.
There are other elements of speed that don’t relate to the processor. Both devices might be tied when it comes to using WiFi, but one version of the iPad Mini features a distinct advantage — the ability to use 4G LTE. This would give users the ability to have the fastest internet speeds while on the go. The Galaxy Tab 3 has a WiFi-only version and a 3G version, meaning it wouldn’t be able to match the wireless speeds of the iPad Mini, but it would be able to make calls.
At 7.9 inches diagonally, the iPad Mini comes in with the bigger screen, as the Galaxy Tab 3 will just be 7 inches. However, it’s hard to say which one benefits most from its screen size, as bigger might not be better when customers are shopping for a more portable tablet. The iPad Mini is the taller and wider of the two, but it is also about 25 percent shallower. This sleek profile could give it an edge. Both devices feature two versions, as mentioned above, and both models of the Galaxy Tab 3 weigh in slightly lighter than the corresponding iPad Mini models…
The iPad Mini comes with storage options of 16, 32, and 64 gigabytes, while the Galaxy Tab 3 only has an 8GB and 16GB version. However, the Samsung device has the option of an additional 64GB through the microSD slot, which gives users the option of cheaper memory. The Galaxy Tab 3 also features twice the Random Access Memory of the iPad Mini, meaning it should be able to multi-task and run multiple apps smoother.
The Samsung device features a weaker camera than the iPad Mini, but a tablets camera may not be a terribly significant sales point.
The Galaxy Tab 3 may not prove to be an iPad Mini killer, but it should prove a strong competitor, given the close technological specifications. According to Samsung, it will launch over the next 2 months, with the 3G version coming out in June. The struggle between Samsung and Apple seems to bleeding over into more and more categories, from smartphones and tablets to everything in between. Soon, it could even spread to a smartwatch product category.
