Will Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) fifth-generation iPad become even lighter and smaller than its predecessors? A new video uncovered by Apple Insider on the Vietnamese website Tinhte.vn reveals tantalizing hints about the dimensions of Apple’s newest iteration of iPad. Unfortunately, as of this writing, the video has been removed from the website.
The video shows someone holding a current generation of iPad over a case that is purportedly for the new iPad 5. In the video, it appears that the old model of iPad is wider and taller than the case for the new iPad. This suggests that the new iPad will lose some width and height. Since it is unlikely that Apple would alter the screen size, the reduction in width and height is most likely due to a reduction in the size of the bezels. The thinner style of bezels is reminiscent of Apple’s iPad mini design.
Besides demonstrating that the new iPad will have overall smaller dimensions, the new iPad case also has a hole in the back that would appear to align with a rumored rear microphone. Previous leaks that have purported to show the new iPad case have also had this rear microphone space.
The smaller size of the new iPad will also help to reduce its weight. Last month, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the iPad 5 would be approximately 500 grams, which is 25 percent lighter than the current model.
The Tinhte.vn website has a fairly good track record regarding Apple product leaks. Apple Insider notes that the site has previously been the source for numerous leaks of unreleased Apple products. Last year the site acquired a third-generation iPad before it was officially released. Last month this same website also claimed that the iPhone 5S will be upgraded with a 12-megapixel camera.
Here’s how Apple has traded so far this week.
