Expanding Microsoft Sets Retail Sights on China


Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) says it is planning further expansion and development of its retail stores throughout 2013 and beyond, including its first store in China.

Including its temporary speciality stores, the worldwide leader in software and services has 75 outlets. Microsoft’s chief operating officer, Kevin Turner, said at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference on Wednesday that the company plans to establish at least 101 stores by “this time next year.”

As part of the expansion, Turner also said Microsoft was planning to open its first retail store in China in the near future. He added that the move will be “very, very strategic to us, big time.”

The company’s decision to open more retail stores is good news for consumers and tech heads who love to get their hands on products, ask questions and learn about using Microsoft’s new gadgets.

Microsoft has been using its stores, which are primarily located in the U.S., to push its Windows 8 PCs, Surface tablet, Xbox, and Windows Phones. Founded in 1975, Microsoft opened its first retail store just before its Windows 7 release in 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Since then, Microsoft has seen more than 13 million customers pass through its doors.

“The Microsoft retail store experience was designed to help customers get up and running on their new technology quickly and to get the most out of it to meet their individual needs,” the company said in a press release. ”The Microsoft retail store has an extensive menu of services, including the answer desk, personal training, workshop area, personal shopping sessions, and business solutions.”

The software giant also recently announced it would be opening stores — approximately 1,500 square feet to 2,200 square feet — within 600 Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) locations. These outlets placed inside Best Buys will enable consumers to easily browse, try, compare, and purchase a wide variety of Microsoft products.
