Facebook, Twitter Enter the Google Glass Game

Standing in front of a crowd of developers that filled the main room, the overflow room, and even flooded into an impromptu viewing area, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Developer Advocate Timothy Jordan announced a lineup of partner apps for its new Internet-connected eyeware, Google Glass. Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) and Twitter were among the highlights, stating that they’d already built or are in the processing of building apps for the eyeware. CNN, Tumblr and Evernote were also on the list.

A report by AllThingsD explained that Google is working on a Glass Development Kit that will introduce a broader set of tools that developers can use to write software. It initially only released a relatively limited programming interface, known as the Mirror API.

Each partner offers an array of new innovations, with some capitalizing on Glass’s video streaming abilities and others making use of the photo-taking feature. Facebook is reportedly building an app that allows photos taken on the glasses to be shared directly with the social network.

Similarly, Twitter explained in a blog post Thursday, “With Twitter for Google Glass, you can share photos to Twitter …  you can also keep up with the people you follow on Twitter through notifications — for mentions, DMs, and Tweets from users for whom you’ve turned on notifications. As always, you can reply to, retweet, or favorite these Tweets.”

TechCrunch also explained how CNN will use Glass as a way to alert users of new breaking news, and Evernote will offer users the ability to have their notes shared to Glass from the web or mobile apps.

As to whether there is going to be an app store for Glass, Jordan promises, “We’re definitely going to have something.”
