There seems to be some uncertain rumors going around about Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). The companies have reportedly been engaged in talks about Facebook’s Home (its new mobile platform), but it’s unclear what’s true and what’s just speculation.
Very early Tuesday morning, Bloomberg released a report saying that Facebook was in talks with Apple and Microsoft about porting of the new Home application that it had developed on Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android. So far, Home is only for Android, and even then, it is not supported on all Android devices.
Getting its Home application into a central spotlight on iOS and Windows Phone as well would be great for Facebook’s ability to leverage mobile for advertising. With Android power 70 percent of smartphones and Apple taking 21 percent, Facebook could have an incredibly extensive mobile advertising base if it could develop Home — or some version of it — for both Android and iOS…
According to Bloomberg, a majority of users access Facebook on their mobile devices, which makes it increasingly important for Facebook to enhance its mobile platform and also make the mobile platform more appealing to advertisers. Having Home available on all operating systems would certainly be one way to appeal to advertisers.
However, despite Bloomberg‘s suggestion that Facebook is in active talks with folks at Apple and Microsoft, an update on the same story from The Next Web claimed that these talks were not taking place. The Next Web said that a source inside Facebook has denied reports that the company is in talks about porting Home over to iOS and Windows Phone.
While getting Home onto more devices would be good for Facebook’s advertising in the long run, it may not be nearly as close to realization as Bloomberg‘s article would suggest.
