Is Samsung Being Too Mean to Apple?
Samsung (SSNLF.PK) fired its latest marketing barb at its Cupertino, California-based rival in the form of an advertisement that characterizes Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone as an outdated, technologically obsolete smartphone for old folks. In the setting of a high school graduation pool party, the technologically savvy kids stun their iPhone-using parents with the Galaxy S4’s plethora of new features.
Samsung puts down the iPhone and its users as outdated and clueless while showing off several Galaxy S4 features. These include the Galaxy’s 13-megapixel camera resolution, its continuous shot feature, its gesture control answering feature, and its ability to wirelessly share photos. One old iPhone user helplessly tries to wirelessly share through her iPhone. Another young person even amazes an old Apple user with the Samsung Galaxy’s ability to function as a TV remote.
“What are we doing with these things?” asks one of the old clueless folks as he holds his iPhone. Samsung soon provides the answer with its ad tagline, “The next big thing is here.”
Interestingly, Samsung’s ad attack on Apple recalls the Mac vs. PC commercials in which Apple tried to characterize Microsoft users as goofy nerds with an inflexible, featureless product. Apparently the old adage of “what goes around, comes around,” is especially true comes to pointed advertisement attacks.
