Is There a Brand New Windows Phone Coming?

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) appears to have just leaked one of its next smartphone operating systems, and it has some changes that could be popular.

When Microsoft was developing Windows Phone, it apparently didn’t have time to create a notification center. According to Microsoft, it “ran out of time.” The notification center has been a useful and handy tool on devices powered by Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system. Having a similar feature on Windows Phones could make it easier for Android users to consider making the switch when it comes time to buy their next phone.

A user of the popular forum Reddit posted photos from a phone obtained through an eBay auction. Considering the software details and applications included on the device, it seems that the device is actually a developer model. Some of the applications are test apps, which Microsoft often includes on developer models, and they add the likelihood of the device featuring an early build of future software.

The actual device is a Lumia 920, made by Nokia (NYSE:NOK). This suggests that when the new software does come out, it will definitely be seen on Nokia’s high-end series of Windows-based smartphones. This may help consumers know that there are bright things in store for the future if they’re considering Nokia devices.

Microsoft has been asked for comment, but responded saying that it “doesn’t comment on rumor or speculation.” Microsoft refusing to comment doesn’t mean the implications aren’t true. Sources for The Verge have confirmed that the software shown in the Reddit user’s photos are in fact an early build of Windows Phone Blue — a future operating system for devices.
