This newly released application is the first of its kind for the Windows Phone 8 platform. Although this update is free to download, it requires a Netflix account to activate it.

Before this new application, Windows Phone 8 users had to use the application built for the Windows Phone 7.5. The previous version meant that the users had to watch shows and movies in 5:3 aspect ratio at a 800×480 resolution.

The Nokia Lumia  (NYSE:NOK) 920 was one of the few phones that was able to display video without the black bars on the screen. This was because the Nokia Lumia 920 had 1280×768 resolution, but the actual problem still existed.

The Netflix application has been frequently updated for the iOS and Android platforms. The application for the Windows Phone has been basically unchanged since it first launched in 2010. Although the Netflix application for the Windows platform has not been updated as frequently as the iOS and Android platforms, Blackberry (NASDAQ:BBRY) 10 users will not get a new application at least for a few years.
