Google has officially unveiled the Pixel Buds, a new set of wireless headphones that are intended to compete with Apple’s AirPods. So how do the two headphones compare, particularly when it comes to one of the most important factors, the battery life?
The Pixel Buds have the exact same battery life as the AirPods. According to The Verge, Google’s wireless headphones last for five hours on a single charge, which is the same amount of time that the AirPods last. They also come with a charging case which is said to provide 24 hours of battery life total. Similarly, the AirPods come with a charging case that provides 24 hours of battery life.
No one has really had the opportunity to test out the Pixel Buds extensively and see what the battery life is like in practice, but the company makes the same promise with its battery life that Apple makes.

The two headphones are also identical in terms of price, as they are both $159. And also like the AirPods, the Pixel Buds are sold separately from the phone itself. But unlike the AirPods, the Pixel Buds come in three colors: black, white, and blue. One nifty feature that’s exclusive to the Pixel Buds is that if you use a Pixel phone, you can turn on Google Translate and actually have conversations translated to you as they occur. Google Assistant is built in as well.
Also unlike the AirPods, both ears of the Pixel Buds are connected through a wire, which is intended to rest on the back of the user’s head. The AirPods, in contrast, have no wires at all, not even a wire connecting both buds. A product manager for Google told Wired that they included a connecting wire because they didn’t want users to have to deal with small pieces that can easily be lost.

With the Pixel, Google has followed in Apple’s footsteps by removing the headphone jack, a decision that was considered risky and highly controversial back in 2016. And so naturally with the removal of the headphone jack came wireless headphones, although users can use any wireless bluetooth headphones and aren’t limited to the Pixel Buds.
The Pixel Buds will be available for purchase this November.
