Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) has struck a sales home run — the company has sold more than six million PlayStation 4 gaming systems less than four months after the product’s American launch and barely a week after its Japanese launch.
Japanese electronics company Sony announced that it has sold more than 6 million PlayStation 4 gaming consoles. This announcement comes less than ten days after its launch in Japan. John Koller, vice president of marketing for Sony’s American subsidiary, wrote a celebratory blog post to mark the sales milestone.
“It’s truly humbling to see the rate at which gamers across the globe are choosing PS4 as their next gen console of choice. Even more exciting is what happens when gamers power up their PS4s. In the United States, more than 90 percent of PS4s are online, enabling gamers to connect, compete, and share their greatness with friends and fellow gamers,” wrote Koller in on PlayStation’s U.S. blog on Monday.
The PlayStation 4 is the latest Sony gaming console and heir to Sony’s PlayStation 3 system. Unlike previous members of the PlayStation lineage, the PlayStation 4 is not backwards compatible, meaning gamers could not enjoy their old favorites on the new system. Despite the lack of this feature, gamers are buying the new system in droves since its November 2013 American release. It was also released in Western Europe and Latin America during the same period. The system currently costs $399 US as March 2014.
A handful of games launched at the same time as the new system, with more new releases planned for 2014. Popular franchises a first-person shooter Call of Duty, virtual soccer game FIFA, and pop music overloaded Just Dance all made their PS4 debut on November 15, along with the gaming system. Final Fantasy and Rocksteady’s conclusion to its Batman game series, Batman: Arkham Knight await releases this year.
Outside of traditional gaming, the PS4 can be used as a DVD/Blu-Ray player, but streaming content is also a major driver of the PS4’s success, with more than 90 percent of the consoles being connected to the Internet to use video streaming platforms Twitch and Ustream. Twitch has particularly benefited from the success of the newest PlayStation. In a February 2014 press release, the company attributed its recent growth to the new console.
“Twitch attributes the latest growth in broadcasters and popularity to its integration into Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation4 (PS4) computer entertainment system. Less than two months after the console launched, 20 percent of Twitch broadcasters were PS4 owners,” wrote Chase, the public relations director at Twitch.
The PlayStation 4 is not the only new gaming system on the block. It faces competition from Microsoft’s Xbox One, which was also released just in time for the 2013 holiday shopping season. The rival gaming systems have been competing for the top spot since release, but it seems the PlayStation 4 has won the crown for now. Approximately 3.9 million Xbox One consoles have been sold as of January 2014. The PlayStation 4 had reached more than 4 million units sold by that same month.
