Rumor: Apple Will Release New MacBook Air Models Tomorrow

new macbook airApple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will launch new versions of its 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air models tomorrow, according to multiple sources cited by 9to5Mac. According to these sources, shipments of the new MacBook Air models have already arrived at various retail store locations and Apple Store employees are currently rearranging in-store displays for tomorrow’s product unveiling.

Although Apple has long been rumored to be working on a revolutionary new type of MacBook Air that will feature major hardware changes, it appears that the new MacBook Air models only include an upgraded Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) Haswell processor. According to a technical specification sheet for the new entry-level 13-inch MacBook obtained by 9to5Mac, the new model will feature a faster 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz. However, this is a relatively minor increase in processing power, since Apple’s current entry-level model already features a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 processor with Turbo Boost up to 2.6GHz.

Other than the processor upgrade, it appears that the new MacBook Air model will retain the same overall design and other technical specifications. Like the current model, the new 13-inch MacBook Air also features a 1440 by 900 pixel resolution display and a standard 128GB of flash storage. The new model also offers the same 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Intel HD Graphics 5000 card. The size and weight of the new laptop also remained the same.

Although this is not the “ultra-slim” 12-inch MacBook Air refresh described by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a research note earlier this month, it should be noted that Kuo predicted that the “ultra-slim” MacBook Air would not be released until the fourth-quarter of this year, reports Apple Insider.

According to Kuo, the 12-inch model will combine the size advantage of the current 11-inch MacBook Air with the higher workload capability of the 13-inch MacBook Air. Other details about the upcoming 12-inch MacBook were revealed by an anonymous leaker via a forum post uncovered by MacRumors earlier this year.

According to the anonymous poster, the 12-inch MacBook lacks a fan assembly and features a new type of trackpad without the typical mechanical button. While the anonymous leaker’s claims can’t be independently confirmed, MacRumors noted that the author of this forum post has previously leaked accurate information and photos about other unreleased MacBook hardware.

Apple’s refreshed 11-inch MacBook Air will presumably feature a similarly upgraded processor as the 13-inch model. Although the Online Apple Store has not yet been updated with any new MacBook Air information, Apple has previously posted new product information on its website the night before a launch.
