‘Titanfall’ DLC Trailer Hits the Web: Too Good to Be True?

Respawn Entertainment has released a trailer for a new Titanfall DLC that brings Optimus Prime into the game. Yes, the leader of the Autobots has decided to take a break from his never-ending struggle against the Decepticons to duke it out against titans instead. It seems like a ideal match, seeing as both titans and Transformers are enormous robots. According to the trailer, this previously unannounced DLC is dropping today, April 1, 2014.

Titanfall is an online shooter that’s currently available for Xbox One and Windows PCs, and is coming soon for Xbox 360. The game is based around six-on-six multiplayer battles in which characters can run along walls, equip a number of weapons, and pilot giant mechs called “titans.” That’s where Optimus Prime comes in.

The trailer shows the lead Transformer equipping a giant golden battle axe that lets him hack away at titans, as well as powering on a cloaking device that makes him nearly invisible. He can also bring his enormous metal boot down on poor humans, so you might want to keep an eye on the sky if you’re not in control of him. You can even see Optimus transform into his semi truck form and drive away. The DLC is coming first to Xbox One, and it features “Prime Time,” a new song by Linkin Park.

Does this crossover seem too good to be true? Do Optimus Prime’s character model and voice acting seem a little undercooked in the trailer? Is today the day when April Fool’s jokes run rampant on the Internet? The answer to all of those questions, of course, is yes.

The real origin of this April Fool’s Day joke is IGN.com. If you read the fine print at the end of the trailer, they thank a few individuals as well as squadron.tv, a production company that specializes in new media content, including, according to their website, commercials, trailers, and promotional campaigns.

The fine print goes on to say, “The depiction of Optimus Prime does not indicate affiliation with Autobots, Dinobots, or Headmasters. Megatron would like to remind you that Megatron is the one true ruler of all of Cybertron. All Hail Megatron.” If you want to add a little real Transformers action to your life, however, you’ll be able to see the upcoming movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, when it hits theaters on July 27. You can watch the trailer here.

This isn’t the first or last April Fool’s Day joke you’re likely to see online today, so be sure to keep an eye out for anything overtly silly or too good to be true. For instance, Google, a company that’s known for advertising fake products every April 1, has released a job opening video for a Pokemon master. The job is fake, but if you open Google Maps on Android or iOS, you’ll see a Pokeball in the search menu. Press “Start” next to it, and you’ll begin a map-based game that lets you hunt down Pokemon and tap to catch them.

If you want more April foolery, GameSpot has an April Fool’s Day joke round-up that they’ll be updating throughout the day.
