Smartphones have a firm grip on today’s society. Mobile devices are so popular that it’s now practically impossible to avoid them in public. From restaurants to restrooms, people take their smartphones everywhere as if they are on call twenty-four hours a day. The smartphone market continues to reach new milestones, but just a handful of companies dominate your mobile devices.

A record number of smartphones can be found around the world. Last year, vendors shipped more than 1 billion smartphones for the first time in history, up 38.4 percent from the 725.3 million units in 2012, according to data firm IDC. In fact, smartphones accounted for 55.1 percent of all mobile phone shipments in 2013, up from 41.7 percent from the prior year.

“The sheer volume and strong growth attest to the smartphone’s continued popularity in 2013,” said Ramon Llamas, research manager with IDC’s mobile phone team. “Total smartphone shipments reached 494.4 million units worldwide in 2011, and doubling that volume in just two years demonstrates strong end-user demand and vendor strategies to highlight smartphones.”

In the United States, comScore recently found that approximately 160 million people own smartphones. Apple ranked as the top manufacturer, while Google’s Android was the top smartphone platform. Let’s take a look at the top ten companies reaching the most people, according to mobile browsing and app usage.
