Virgin Mobile Offers Drastic Discounts on Contract-Free iPhones

Virgin Mobile, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sprint (NYSE:S), has drastically cut its prices for the off-contract iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. According to Virgin Mobile’s official website, the price for Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) 16GB iPhone 5S has been dropped by 30 percent and is now only $384.99. Similarly, the entry-level 16GB iPhone 5C price has been lowered to $314.99. In comparison, Apple currently sells the unlocked 16GB iPhone 5S for $649 and the unlocked 16GB iPhone 5C for $549 through its Apple Store website.

Although discount retail giant Walmart (NYSE:WMT) offers the 16GB iPhone 5S for as little as $119 with a two-year service contract, Virgin Mobile’s $384.99 price appears to be the lowest price ever offered for a contract-free 16GB iPhone 5S. Sprint’s prepaid wireless subsidiary is also offering substantial discounts on the higher capacity iPhone models.  The 32GB iPhone 5S is available for $454.99 and the 64GB iPhone 5S is available for $524.99. The 32GB iPhone 5C has also been discounted to $384.99. Virgin Mobile is also offering several legacy iPhone models at heavily discounted prices. The contract-free 8GB iPhone 4S is being offered for $244.99, or 30 percent off its regular price. The 8GB iPhone 4 is being offered for only $179.99, or 10 percent off its regular price.

Although all of Virgin Mobile’s iPhones are being offered without a contract, it should be noted that the devices will be tied to Sprint’s network. In other words, although customers may not have to sign a standard two-year service contract, they will still have to plan on only using their iPhones on Sprint’s network. Virgin Mobile’s iPhone sale is also a “Web Exclusive” offer that is only available for a limited time.

Virgin Mobile offers several pre-paid “Beyond Talk” plans that start for as little as $35 per month. However, users can qualify for a $5 per month discount on any of the plans if they sign up for an automatic payment plan through a credit, debit, or PayPal account.

The entry-level “Beyond Talk” plan includes 300 anytime minutes, unlimited messaging, and 2.5 gigabytes of 3G or 4G speed data a month. Customers looking for more monthly minutes can pay $45 a month to get 1,200 anytime minutes, while $55 a month gives customers unlimited anytime minutes. However, all of the “Beyond Talk” plans include 2.5 GB a month of high speed data. Users that surpass the 2.5 GB monthly data threshold will likely have their data speed throttled. Virgin Mobile has not revealed when its “limited time” iPhone sale will end, so interested customers should check out Virgin Mobile’s website as soon as possible.
