Consumers may soon not need to look for a socket when charging a phone in the kitchen. DuPont (NYSE:DD) has announced a partnership with the Power Matters Alliance, or PMA, and plans to embed wireless charging technology in its Corian-based surfaces. While this material is often used for countertops, a press release announcing the development leaves the door open to wireless charging in a number of “furnishing solutions.”
The move would represent DuPont’s entry into the field of consumer electronics, and the company is hinting they have big things planned for their association with the PMA.
“We recognize that wireless power is fundamental for the further development of our mobile society, and we look forward to combining it with the design versatility and beauty of…Corian solid surface,” said Ruslan Yusupov, DuPont Building Innovations’ global marketing director.
After explaining how Corian adds functionality to everyday activities, Yusupov said DuPont plans to “bring this level of performance to new heights, while meeting the emerging needs of industries and consumers to remain powered up throughout the day.” Notably, the term “countertops” is never used in the company’s press release.
DuPont’s Corian is used widely as a replacement for granite in countertops and is the material of choice for hospitals, schools and numerous other industries. DuPont’s press release stressed the versatility of the material, describing its “limitless possibilities” for applications in “residential, public and commercial environments, both indoor and outdoor.”
DuPont will utilize Powermat technology to add the wireless charging capabilities to Corian products. Powermat Technologies is the company that, along with Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), founded the Power Matters Alliance last year. The U.S. government’s Energy Star is a member of the PMA board, along with AT&T (NYSE:T) and Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX).
While consumers are used to interacting with a variety of DuPont products, the integration of wireless charging in “furnishing solutions” of all kinds will add visibility and increase the company’s overall breadth. The field of consumer electronics is as limitless as the company’s conception of Corian.
