Will Samsung’s Future TV Bend and Twist Before Apple’s?

A newly published patent by Samsung Electronics may just end up being the solution to every lazy TV watcher’s problems. Mashable reports the filing describing a TV with a flexible display and thankfully, TV-watchers won’t even have to get up off the couch, as the display could be bent with use of the remote control.

Though rumors have long been circulating about Samsung’s flexible OLED displays, there was more expectation that the technology would be geared toward smartphones, rather than TVs.

Should the patent become a reality, in addition to the TV being able to bend or rotate depending on its viewer’s preference, the remote control, communicating with the TV via Bluetooth or infrared connection, would also be able to adapt the TV’s images to fit its new positioning.

Whatever Samsung’s gameplan might be, the company is likely trying to work as quickly as possible, and for good reason. Though rumors have long been circulating about Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new TV, dating as early as January 2011, there is speculation that the Apple iTV could be out in time for the 2013 holidays. Price, rather than technology, has been the cited problem in the setback; however, reports in 2012 by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster intimated a 2013 holiday launch.

Though Tim Cook may not have had Samsung in mind when he told NBC in December 2012, ”When I go into my living room and turn on the TV, I feel like I have gone backwards in time by 20 to 30 years,” it appears the electronic company is doing all it can to make Cook’s dream a reality.
