Can iPad Mini Spark Apple’s Sales Numbers?
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has predicted Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will sell at least 5 million units of the rumored iPad Mini in the December quarter, with every five units of the smaller tablets cannibalizing one full-size 9.7-inch iPad.
Munster had previously forecast sales of 21 million iPads in the December quarter. He raised that number to a combined total of 25 million, accounting for the 1 million units he predicts will be cannibalized. Munster’s predictions assume that Apple’s scheduled event next week is in fact to launch the smaller tablet and that the device will go on sale, per usual the company’s product calendar, on November 2.

The analyst said the 8.75-inch tablet would likely be priced between $249 and $299 for the entry-level model, with 8 GB of storage and a non-Retina display.
For the upcoming calendar year, Munster thinks the company will see combined tablet sales of 95 million, up from the earlier estimate of 86.5 million to account for the iPad Mini. However, he also expects Apple to drop the average selling price of the iPad from $527 to $495 in calendar 2013. In addition, the analyst said the average selling price of the new, smaller iPad will fall between $350 and $360 because a fair number of customers were likely to opt for higher capacity models.
