Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has added a new chief technology officer to its staff to help create a top of the line graphics chip.

The company has hired Eric Demers, formerly the CTO at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD), to spearhead the effort. Demers’ first charge will be the merging of Qualcomm’s Adreno team with ATI’s Imageon mobile graphics team, according to reports from Engadget.

The push to develop an advanced graphics chip will allow Qualcomm to compete with companies including NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Imagination Technologies Group plc for dominance in the smartphone market.
