Will Yahoo Kill the TV Remote?

It looks like the smartphone may be sounding the death knell for the ubiquitous TV remote, judging by Yahoo’s (NASDAQ:YHOO) new open source platform announced at its recent developer event.

The platform is seeking to encourage developers to take advantage of the bridge offered by Yahoo between Android apps and its own Connected TV service. Developers may now build ‘second screen experiences’ that can bring Yahoo’s TV platform onto TV sets such as Sony’s (NYSE:SNE) 2012 Bravia EX 40, 46 and 55 inch TV sets. Yahoo launched a companion mobile app that brings users the facility to control Yahoo apps on their TVs with touch and gestures.

With Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) having risen to the challenge with its own launch of Google TV, also compatible with Android apps for second screen viewing on TVs, the field is now open to developers to dream up innovative apps to utilize this new connectivity.
