Amy Slaton has been the main caretaker of her sister, Tammy Slaton, throughout seasons 1 and 2 of 1000-lb Sisters. Because Tammy has been largely immobile for the past few years and had anxiety going out in public, Amy took care of her. But as Tammy has become more independent through the past two seasons of the TLC  show, fans have been wondering why Amy is still caring for her.

Tammy is more independent now on ‘1000-lb Sisters’

When 1000-lb Sisters first premiered, Tammy had been afraid to leave her house and couldn’t walk very far without her walker. Amy allowed Tammy to live with her and her husband, Michael Halterman, in order to care for her. Amy even slept with a baby monitor on Tammy to make sure that nothing happened to her while she slept.

But throughout the course of 1000-lb Sisters Season 1 and 2, Tammy gained some independence back. She got over her fear of going out in public and was able to do more things on her own. She even got her own place right next to Amy and Halterman.

Fans are confused

Since Tammy has become more independent, fans were confused to see that Amy was still somewhat caring for Tammy in the trailer for 1000-lb Sisters Season 3.

“From the previews, it looks like Michael and Amy are still taking care of Tammy,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Why? Whyyyy?! I thought they had finally drawn a hard line that their baby needs to come first and they can’t put their time and energy toward caring for a grown woman anymore!”

“Because they care more about an interesting TLC storyline and staying relevant,” another person added. “If they went their separate ways (like they should have years ago) there would be no show. Amy was almost independent, in a way, and then TLC came knocking.”

“What I’m saying is, Amy was raised in such a way that it doesn’t matter how much someone in her family abuses her – she will always return to it because, subconsciously, she believes she deserves it as that’s what her mother has instilled in her,” another fan said. “I’m sure there is a layer of codependency as well when it comes to Amy and Tammy since they survived their childhood together, have been fat together, have lived with or near each other their entire lives, and their means of income is based upon them being a team.”

“I believe at one point Amy and Michael were being paid by Medicaid as Tammy’s caregivers,” one person claimed. “Not sure if that’s the case still. Also from what Amy and Chris have said, Tammy has burned bridges with all the other siblings so if Amy wasn’t involved in Tammy’s life Tammy would not have anyone.”
