The relationships depicted in ’13 Reasons Why’ are fortified in grief

13 Reasons Why, began as one teen’s story of why she was driven to suicide. Before she died, Hannah Baker left a parting token — her recollection of the events leading up to her death, all recorded on a set of cassette tapes. Season 1 of the show was centered around said tapes.

Since then, her peers, loved ones, and authority figures have worked to reconcile her tragic death. They have often leaned on one another for support, creating seemingly unbreakable bonds. But showrunner Brian Yorkey told Entertainment Weekly that one popular pair will endure turmoil in their relationship.

From the beginning of 13 Reasons Why, Tony and Clay have had each other’s backs. Their connection resonates with viewers who dig their genuine friendship. In fact, many followers want the twosome to have more screen time than they’ve had in past seasons.

“Tony & Clay still have such a great friendship, but I wish they had a little more time between the 2 of them,” tweeted one admirer.

As friendships go, 13 Reasons Why fans believe these pals are end game. But when speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the series, Yorkey, teased trouble in paradise between the duo. He said this about Tony and Clay’s season 4 journey:

Clay has some mental health struggles in season 4 and Tony does too, but Tony deals with them in a different way, and so there’s going to be a little bit of friction between Tony and Clay in a way that I think is going to be uncomfortable for those of us who love the Clay and Tony of it all, but it’s also really satisfying in the way we see the two of them work through it.
