1883 Episode 9 cranked up the intensity on an already dangerous journey. Shea Brennan and his group faced a misunderstanding with the Lakata tribe that resulted in disastrous consequences. A lot of characters died in episode 9 and fans might need some help taking stock of who survived and will continue on the journey.

The Dutton family remains intact — for now

Yellowstone fans already know that James, Margaret, and John make it to Montana in one piece. They are alive and well in a flashback in Yellowstone Season 4. At the end of 1883 Episode 9, Elsa is still alive, but it doesn’t seem like that will last.

When a group of Lakota Native Americans attacked, Elsa fell off her horse and was knocked unconscious. She woke up to confront the attackers and ended up with an arrow in her stomach. However, when Elsa spoke Comanche to the Lakota, they stopped their attack.

Wade and Margaret pulled out the arrow and cauterized the wound, but it seems pretty clear that Elsa won’t live long. Wade tells James that the blood that came out of her was dark, suggesting that the arrow knicked her liver. James also notes that the arrow that went through Elsa was filthy. Infection is sure to set in, and the Dutton family live several decades before the invention of penicillin.

Shea and Thomas avoid a fight with the Lakota

Shea, Thomas, and James set out to kill the men who murdered the Lakota women and children in 1883 Episode 9. They manage to take down the murderous thieves in another gunfight. Later, the Lakota tribe spotted James, Shea, and Thomas. James rides to confront them, and the Lakota Chief realizes that he is Elsa’s father.

James tells the Lakota that he killed the men who murdered their women and children. The Lakota Chief tells James that there won’t be any more fighting today and instructs him to take Elsa to a surgeon. James, Shea, and Thomas leave the encounter unscathed.

Only a few immigrants made it through ‘1883’ Episode 9

Noemi is one of the only immigrants to survive the encounter with the Lakota. When Shea asks Thomas, “How’s your lady?” he replies, “She lived Captain.” Noemi can briefly be seen walking about the camp. Although they aren’t shown, her sons presumably survived the encounter as well, considering Noemi doesn’t look too devasted.

An unnamed older male immigrant can also be seen walking about the camp after the blood bath. He has white hair and wears a brown cap. This man has not been introduced by name, but maybe in the final episode, he will have more of a part to play. It’s also possible that a few other immigrants survived and weren’t shown on camera, but for now, these are all the characters we can confirm to still be alive.
