Jennifer Lopez makes an effort to take care of herself so she can stay in top form at work and in her personal life. Here are four self-care tips J.Lo follows.

Get enough sleep

Lopez says sleep is one of the most important self-care practices. In her recent newsletter, she discussed how not getting enough sleep led to a health scare a few years ago. She says she was so sleep-deprived and doing more than she could handle that she reached a point one day where she felt like she couldn’t move. Now, Lopez makes sure to get enough rest, so her body isn’t depleted.

“We don’t value sleep,” says Lopez in her newsletter. “We value grinding and working hard — and admittedly, nobody gets caught up in that rat race more than me. I’ve found however, that sleep to me is the most underrated beauty secret out there. It’s one of the tenets of JLo Beauty and part of my 5 S’s: Sunscreen, Serum, Supplements, (vivir) Sano [live healthy], and Sleep!” (Lopez learned how to hustle from her parents.)

Think positive thoughts

Lopez also encourages maintaining a positive mindset. She gave fans a peek inside her daily morning practice, which includes affirmations. She keeps a box in her bathroom with positive quotes so that she can set the tone for her day.

During an Instagram video, she showed her fans the card she pulled out for that day, which was a quote from Hellen Keller encouraging others to resolve to be happy. In the quote, Keller says, “Your success and happiness lies in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.”

Lopez says she likes that quote because she wants to stay in a joyful frame of mind despite whatever is going on around her. “I’m going to resolve to keep happy, no matter what,” she says in her Instagram video. “It’s a promise you make to yourself.” She went on to say her success and happiness lie within her.

Take a bubble bath

One of Lopez’s favorite self-care practices is taking a bubble bath. She enjoys slowing down, soaking in the water and reflecting on her day.

In her newsletter, Lopez says this practice has become a “ritual” for her. One thing that’s important for her is staying off the phone during this time. She likes to use that time to focus on rejuvenation.

“My favorite form of self-care is taking a bath!” says Lopez. “To be honest, it’s the most luxurious thing I do. It’s a ritual for me. I use all kinds of bath salts, bath milks and aromatherapy oils. And I love throwing all different color rose petals, dried lavender, and rosemary in there too! Soaking keeps my skin hydrated and silky and calms me down from all the day’s stimulation. I try not to be on my phone either; just pure relaxation time.”

Get comfortable with being on your own

One thing Lopez says she learned about taking care of herself was that she must get comfortable with being alone. She says she learned this lesson after her breakups with ex-husband Marc Anthony and ex-fiancé Alex Rodriguez.

“I love my life right now,” says Lopez during an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1. “I love what I’m doing. I love where I’m at. I love the person I’m continually evolving into and becoming. And that kind of joy, that kind of happiness, that kind of love, always inspires me. When I feel really good, I feel like I do my best music.”
