On recent episodes of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, Tania Maduro and Syngin Colchester’s marriage has been more on the rocks than ever.

During their trip to Syngin’s home country of South Africa to visit his brother Dylan Colchester, who had recently been hospitalized, the couple argued bitterly in front of Syngin’s family. Tania was angry about Syngin’s lack of direction and admitted that she sometimes wondered if she should leave the marriage because of his free-spirited ways. At one point, she even pointed out that the only reason Syngin had gotten to the U.S. was “because of her.”

The 90 Day Fiancé star recently took to Instagram to share a quote about childhood bullying, gender roles, and abusive relationships. While many of Tania’s followers appreciated the message, several 90 Day Fiancé fans immediately pointed out that Tania’s own relationship with Syngin didn’t match up with what she was trying to convey.

Tania posted a quote about ‘abuse’ on Instagram

Tania recently shared another Instagram user’s quote about healthy relationship between men and women, as well as between girls and boys. The 90 Day Fiancé star often posts about social justice, political issues, mental health, and gender roles, so this wasn’t out of character for her on social media.

“Never tell your daughter than when a boy is mean or rude to her it’s because he has a crush on her,” the quote read. “Don’t teach her that abuse is a sign of love.”

At first, Tania added a caption about sexism and gender differences in relationships between young people. Later, however, she updated the caption to reflect the fact that abuse, bullying, and mistreatment were not gender-specific.

“This actually goes all ways, it is not gender-specific,” the 90 Day Fiancé star wrote in her updated caption, “and I’m also seeing some ‘girls mature faster and boys mature slower’ comments and it’s a narrative that we need to stop using to justify behaviors.”

“We should not teach little kids at a young age that the child who pinches their arm or pulls their ponytail likes them, but just doesn’t know how to express themselves,” Tania pointed out. “It really does teach people that abuse no matter how small is a substitution for emotions that can’t be verbalized.”

Some ’90 Day Fiancé’ fans argued that Tania’s post was hypocritical

Of course, some 90 Day Fiancé fans immediately applied Tania’s message to her own relationship with Syngin—and argued that it came up short or that it was even hypocritical. Many fans were initially displeased with Tania for telling Syngin he “wasn’t her soulmate,” as well as for traveling to Costa Rica for an herbal medicine intensive for 30 days during Syngin’s first 90 days in the U.S.

Recently, on 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, Tania has drawn criticism once again for her anger towards Syngin and her tendency to yell when frustrated. Given her own history in her relationship, some fans took her remarks as hypocritical.

“Tania should take her own advice and apply it when she speaks to her husband,” one Instagram user wrote under the 90 Day Fiancé star’s post.

Another agreed, writing in reply, “She can be so nasty and sarcastically argumentative at times.”

Yet another fan brought up Tania’s infamous “soulmate” remark in a previous season, commenting sarcastically, “Better yet, don’t tell your husband he isn’t your soulmate.”

One critic added similarly, “If only someone had taught that lesson to Syngin.”

Others thanked Tania for her positive message

Despite some 90 Day Fiancé fans’ criticism, many of Tania’s followers appreciated the overall message of her post.

One commenter pointed out that old sayings should sometimes stay where they came from: the past.

“My husband taught me this when we had our daughter,” they wrote to Tania. “These old sayings are not always good.”

Many followers pointed out that abuse could go “both ways” and that it wasn’t specific to a gender or sexuality.

“Agreed, no woman should have to deal with this kinda abuse (also men don’t have to accept abuse),” a fan wrote in response.

Others praised Tania for arguing that love involved “kindness and respect,” not mistreatment.

“I want to teach my daughter that anyone who truly loves her will treat her with kindness and respect,” one Instagram user wrote in that vein.

While Tania and Syngin continue to be a controversial couple on the TLC show, Tania has garnered a significant social media following of her own. Many fans see her as a positive influence, despite widespread criticism of some of her onscreen actions.
