Asuelu Pulaa’s family wanted a large sum of money

A few episodes ago, while Asuelu and Kalani were planning a trip to see his family in Washington, Asuelu’s mom asked her son to bring $1,000 with him.

Kalani was uncomfortable with the request, as they have their own family to provide for. But Asuelu explained that, in Samoan culture, it is customary for a young adult to financially support their parents.

After much back-and-forth about it, the couple agreed to bring gifts and $100 to Asuelu’s family.

When they arrived, Asuelu was thrilled to see his family. He passed out gifts to everyone before his mom blatantly asked whether he’d brought the money she’d requested. He told her that he could only afford to give her $100 given that he works part-time and has two kids, sparking a screaming match between them.

“Back home, we gotta put our family first. No matter we’re married, we’re supposed to take care of them and send money no matter what,” his sister said.

When Kalani asked if she ever sends money, she told Kalani to mind her business. As the conversation grew more heated, Asuelu’s mom and sister got up and walked away.

Asuelu just took a stand against his family

In the Aug. 16 episode of the show, Asuelu went to talk to his family alone to try and hash out the financial dispute. Unfortunately, his sister doubled down on her stance that he should provide more money before suggesting that he was being controlled by Kalani.

Asuelu explained that he is not being controlled but that “I’m not single anymore. My money is Kalani’s money. Kalani’s money is my money.”

Eventually, he got up to leave after it became increasingly clear that they would not come to an agreement. “My sister hate Kalani and I can’t fix it so I just leave the house and go back to see my wife,” he said in a confessional. “I love my family and I love my wife and I think that I can’t have both.”

When his mom approached him on a later date, Asuelu once again explained that he loves his family but he has to take care of his own first. He told her how expensive life is in America in comparison to Samoa and how he just doesn’t have enough money to support their lifestyle.

Although his mom continued to press the issue, fans are happy that Asuelu stood up for himself and his family.

“I’ve been agreeing with Asuelu for a solid 5 minutes. He’s growing up before our eyes,” read one tweet.

“Proud of Asuelu. Sisters disrespected his wife. He left,” said another.

Echoing that, someone else wrote: “Look at you Asuelu!!! Proud of you for standing up for yourself and your wife!!”
