As a mother, Debbie of 90 Day Fiancé feels an instinctual need to protect her child. She wants her son, Colt Johnson, to have the best life with someone by his side who really cares for him. But as he tries to build that with his girlfriend Jess Caroline, she hasn’t been all that receptive.

Debbie has repeatedly expressed her belief that he’s moving too quickly while also questioning Jess’s motives in dating her son. While some would argue that she has his best interests at heart, many viewers think she is also overinvolved and overprotective.

Inside Colt’s relationship with Jess

Colt began dating Jess six months after ending his marriage to his former co-star Larissa Dos Santos Lima in January 2019. During the premiere of the fifth season of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?, Colt mentioned that they met on an app and that Jess is an au pair living in Chicago.

He later flew to see her but kept the visit a secret from Debbie, with whom he lives. As he planned another trip to Jess’s home country of Brazil, he finally came clean to his mother, who then decided to tag along.

Speaking about his decision to let her join them, Colt said, “I feel like I owe it to my mother. She really got hurt a lot by my wife, and I want my mother to know that she’ll be okay with the next girl I’m with.” However, there was clear tension between Debbie and Jess when they met.

As the couple discussed their relationship and future children, Debbie started to complain, feigning sickness to mask her disgust. “Oh god, you’re kidding, right?” she said as the pair kissed. “I really, really need to lie down right now.”

By the end of the episode, she had shut herself off in her hotel room while Jess complained to Colt about how uncomfortable Debbie had made her feel.

Debbie later had a sit-down with Jess

At Colt’s urging, Debbie went to talk to Jess in the July 19 episode and tried to get to know her more. She first apologized for snapping, admitting she was just tired after the 15-hour flight. But she also made it clear she had concerns about the speed of their relationship, noting she’d never heard her son talk about having children.

She continued to pry and question Jess about everything from her future plans to her almost-expired visa, which made Jess feel like she was in an interrogation.

“I just feel that Colt is not ready for a serious relationship yet, especially from a girl looking for a green card from Brazil if that’s the case,” Debbie said in a confessional.

In a sneak peak from the upcoming episode, Debbie and Jess appear to get into a heated argument over dinner as Debbie continued to comment on her relationship with Colt.

Fan reactions to Debbie’s behavior on ’90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?’

As the July 19 episode aired, fans took to websites such as Twitter to vent about Debbie’s behavior.

One fan declared, “So what if Colt wants to end up with Jess and she wants to get married, have kids, and stay in the states…its their choice/mistake to make! Stop being a mommy-wife Debbie!!”

Another argued, “Debbie needs to get a life and quit acting like a jealous wife.”

“Colt is allowed to make his own mistakes as an adult so please let him. No need for Debbie to come on the trip and bring all the energy down,” said a third fan. “Okay. Rant over.”
