’90 Day Fiancé’: Paul Staehle’s Mom Accuses Him of ‘Using’ His Son to Get Money From Her In ‘Happily Ever After’ Sneak Peek

In a new sneak peek of an upcoming episode of TLC’s ’90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After,’ Paul Staehle asked his skeptical mom to help him out financially after he moved back to the U.S. with his Brazilian wife, Karine Martins Staehle. But Paul’s mom told him in no uncertain terms that she wouldn’t be doing any such thing.

Paul Staehle and Karine Martins Staehle are taking a big risk by moving from Karine’s home country of Brazil to Paul’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, on the fifth season of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After. With their infant son, Pierre, in tow, Paul hopes to land a solid job and get on better financial footing. Meanwhile, Karine is clearly apprehensive about the idea—and Paul’s mom, Mary, doesn’t want to help Paul out by funding the move.

In a new sneak peek of an upcoming episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After, Paul sat down with his mom to beg her to help out his growing family. But his mother was adamant that her son had taken advantage of her enough over the years, and he needed to stand on his own two feet. What’s more, she even accused the 90 Day Fiancé star of using his young son to get on her good side so she would pay up.

Karine was disappointed after her first few days in the U.S.

Just a day after their arrival in the U.S., Karine and Paul were already at odds. Karine wasn’t impressed by Paul’s rusted-out, messy car—or by the fact that his own parents had locked him out of their house because they didn’t trust him.

Karine explained that she was “disappointed” by Paul’s behavior so far. “I left my life in Brazil to come to America because I thought that Paul would be able to take care of us,” she said. “And I worry if Paul’s family is going to help us, because Paul’s parents don’t want us in their home.”

The 90 Day Fiancé couple began to bicker as they made their way back to their hotel. For his part, Paul worried that Karine would want to head back to Brazil without giving the U.S. much of a chance.

“It’s only our first day here, and I really want this to be a good start and for her to be excited about everything,” Paul, 35, said of his 23-year-old wife. “And that’s just not happening right now. I’m not sure what to do.”

What’s more, Paul wanted to get on Karine’s good side in order to convince her to go out to dinner with his mom that night. Paul hoped his mom, Mary, would agree to give his little family some financial assistance.

“I’m scraping by right now because I don’t have a job lined up, and my mom will only pay for a few days in the hotel,” the 90 Day Fiancé star explained. “If I can get Karine and Pierre to go to dinner tonight, I think it’s going to help a lot with convincing my mother to help us out financially.”

Paul asked his mom to help him out financially

Before dinner, Paul lamented the fact that Karine ultimately decided not to head out with him and his mom. Without her, the 90 Day Fiancé star worried, he didn’t think his mother would be as willing to help out.

“I really wanted Karine to come to dinner with me and my mom so we could discuss our options together as a family,” Paul told TLC producers. “So, I’m very disappointed that Karine doesn’t want to come to dinner.”

As for Mary, she didn’t seem to want to be at dinner with her son at all. “I came because I thought Karine was coming, too, or I wouldn’t have came,” she told Paul bluntly.

And when Paul told his mom about his financial troubles in the States, she had little sympathy to offer. “These are things that you jumped into that you shouldn’t have jumped into,” Mary declared. “You should have waited.”

Despite his mom’s admonishment, Paul asked for some money to help him get on his feet now that he was back in Kentucky. “I’m just trying to offer Pierre the best possible life,” he pleaded. “The thing is, right now, I need a little bit of financial help to get on my feet.” The 90 Day Fiancé star added that he was just looking for a “temporary loan,” not a gift.

The ’90 Day Fiancé’ star’s mom called him out for ‘using’ his son as a bargaining chip

But Paul’s mom didn’t buy his promises to pay her back. Mary complained that her son had relied on her financially for years. Now, she wanted him to “put in the effort” to make money on his own.

“Paul, he always says, ‘It’s temporary. It’s temporary,’” she told 90 Day Fiancé producers, adding that it had never been temporary. “We’ve given Paul enough, and he needs to be on his own now and stand on his own two feet. It’s time.”

Paul’s mother also scolded him for “using Pierre” in his requests for money. “That’s not right,” she told her son.

Mary told 90 Day Fiancé producers that she felt her son was guilt tripping her in order to convince her to give him money. She thought it was a manipulative move, and she didn’t think it was right for him to “use” his child in that way. “I don’t think it’s fair that he does that with Pierre, because he knows that I do care about the baby a lot,” she said. “He knows how to push my buttons, I guess you could say. And he does it well.”

The 90 Day Fiancé star defended his choice to bring Pierre up in asking his mom for the loan. “Pierre deserves to have a good life,” he exclaimed. “If you want to shun me for that and cut me down, I’m sorry.”

His mother, for once, held fast and refused her son any help besides babysitting. “It’s not gonna happen,” she said, in a tone of voice that brooked no arguments.

Mary unapologetically declared that she didn’t want to enable Paul, or even help Paul and Karine, anymore. “He’s got the baby and the wife, and he needs to get his life together,” she exclaimed.
