TLC producer defends casting choices for ‘The Single Life’

TLC’s Senior Vice President of Production, Alon Orstein, spoke about the 90 Day Fiancé casting process on E! Online. The VP said, “First and foremost, people need to be ready to get back out there. Not everyone necessarily is; we want to respect each individuals’ timetable. But it has to be someone who’s ready to get back out there and start the search again.”

Orstein explained, “Along those same lines, they need to have relevant ongoing stories, and they absolutely have to fulfill the most important prerequisite of any 90 Day Fiancé series, and that is continuing to be honest, continuing to be 100 percent transparent and open about all the aspects of their relationships and their romantic lives.”

While 90 Day Fiancé fans might not be happy about the choices, TLC production chose these people for a reason. Orstein explained, “It’s also critical that we have a good mix of subjects, both storylines, age, sexual orientation, life experience. Those are the kinds of things we want reflected in any new season. In regards to the individuals, we think we have a great group of singles here. We’re super excited about the upcoming season.”

’90 Day Fiancé’ producer explains why they chose Debbie, Jesse and Jennifer

The TLC producer explained why they chose specific cast members to return. Orstein said, “For The Single Life, we have Debbie [Johnson], that is such a fresh opportunity for us. She was very prominent obviously in 90 Day Fiancé and Happily Ever After?. But this is the first time. In essence, we’re taking a secondary character and a mom and exploring their single life. She’s a widower. She really hasn’t dated since her husband passed away. She is the oldest person to ever be on a 90 Day franchise. To us, that was just such an incredible opportunity to be able to track her story.”

Orstein explained why Jennifer and Jesse’s blossoming relationship became a no-brainer, saying, “In regards to Jennifer Tarazona and Jesse [Meester], this is the first time we’ve ever seen a couple that wasn’t even on the same season of 90 Day Fiancé. These are two individuals who’ve come together and actually formed a relationship, so for us. They were kind of a no-brainer.”

’90 Day Fiancé’ fans aren’t happy about the casting for ‘The Single Life’ Season 2

Many 90 Day Fiancé fans have vowed to boycott The Single Life Season 2 because they’re upset with the casting choices. One fan wrote on a Reddit post, “I’m not even halfway thru it, and I’m so irritated with this lineup.”

Another 90 Day Fiancé fan commented, “Perfectly said!! 100% agree! I don’t know who is making the decisions at TLC, but it almost feels like it is somebody very new at the job. The choices could not have been worse. And another Reddit user wrote, “It’s awful. Not a single watchable character.”

While many fans aren’t happy about the casting choices, TLC production thinks they’ve made the right choices, at least when it comes to Debbie, Jennifer, and Jesse. Fans will have to keep watching more of The Single Life Season 2 to see what will happen in these returning cast members’ love lives. New episodes of The single Life air Fridays on discovery+.
