The ’90 Day Fiancé’ stars have had an ‘odd’ romance

As 90 Day Fiancé fans know, their eight-year relationship began with Summit catfishing Jenny on Facebook. But she eventually accepted him when she found out the truth about his identity and appearance.

Jenny even left Palm Springs and moved to India to be with Sumit after they communicated online for years. But when she arrived, she found out that he had entered into an arranged marriage. Jenny immediately returned home after what she calls a traumatic incident. The 61-year-old claims that his parents burst into their home and physically removed Sumit.

During the most recent season of 90 Day Fiancé, Jenny decided to give Sumit another chance. He convinced her that he was in the process of divorcing his wife, so she returned to India. He also revealed that he was suicidal as the result of the forced marriage.

Since then, the couple has faced disapproval from his parents and friends. Sumit’s parents can’t handle the 29-year age gap between their son and his fiancé. His friends and community have said the relationship is “downright odd.”

Do ’90 Day Fiancé’ fans in India approve of Jenny and Sumit’s relationship?

According to Screen Rant, Sumit and Jenny often get awkward stares from people when they are out in public. This is not an exaggeration, as one Indian-American fan explained on Reddit.

The fan pointed out that Sumit belongs to a middle-class Hindu family from New Delhi, where dating is “frowned upon.” The Redditor explained that parents encourage arranged marriages. They said the “main goal is to find your child a suitable match with a background and family you believe will be advantageous for your child’s future.”

This age-old practice rarely ends in divorce because it is difficult both “bureaucratically and socially.” It’s also tradition for a daughter-in-law to look after her husband’s parents, taking on the responsibilities of a daughter.

This cultural difference is one of the biggest reasons Sumit’s parents can’t accept that he wants to marry Jenny. Sumit has made it clear that he would never abandon his parents to marry Jenny. But, it appears to many fans that he may have to choose between his family and his fiancé.

Sumit’s mother explains why she will never ‘accept’ Jenny

During the October 11 episode of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, Sumit sat down with his mother, Sahna, and his father, Anil, to discuss his relationship with Jenny. She was back in India living with her 32-year-old fiancé. But, she will have to leave if she and Sumit don’t get married.

“She is not with us,” Sahna declared. “If she was younger, I’d have happily accepted her into my home. Forget her.”

Anil added, “The age of Jenny is, I think, more than double of your age. Within the Indian society, these things are not acceptable.”

According to In Touch Weekly, Sahna said in her confessional that her son has never been “so distant” with his parents. She admitted that it was causing her to lose sleep. But she also made it clear she would “never” change her mind about Jenny.

Sahna claimed that people would look down on her son’s relationship. She started to cry as she explained people would make fun of him for being with someone “older than his mother.” Sahna revealed that she was afraid Sumit would have to take care of Jenny in the future instead of his parents.

Fans will have to wait and see if Jenny and Sumit make it down the aisle. New episodes of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way air Sunday nights on TLC.
