Paul Staehle talks with his mother before leaving for Brazil
Paul and his mother, Mary, walk Paul’s dog the day before he heads off to Brazil. “My mother and me are extremely close,” Paul tells the producers. “I think the only person more worried about this trip than me is my mother.”
Mary asks why he doesn’t date someone from where they are. “I’ve had so much bad luck in my past relationships, as you know, that I’m trying to find something a little different,” Paul tells his mother.
“Paul hasn’t told me too much about Karine,” Mary tells the cameras. “Just told me that she’s from Brazil, and she’s in school. And I’ve seen pictures. That’s about all I know. I think it’s too far away. I think it’s crazy.”
Paul reveals he’s thinking about proposing to Karine
Mary tells Paul that Karine looks “young.” Paul then drops a bomb and tells his mom that he’s thinking of proposing.
“I don’t think that’s smart at all,” she tells her son. “I just don’t think how you can know anybody just on the internet… you don’t even speak the same language. I just think it’s all crazy myself, really.”
“I’ve invested a great deal emotionally in this relationship. If I get burned again, I might just give up on love altogether,” Paul tells the cameras.

The morning has finally arrived, and Paul prepares to leave for his first-ever trip to Brazil. He reinforces his storage containers that he’s bringing along with him. Mary helps him put the supplies in the car, and Paul tells the cameras that his mother is taking him to the airport.
“She’s feeling extremely emotional about me leaving,” Paul says.
Paul’s mother then gives him some of her hair. Paul picks something up questioning if it’s dog hair. It’s wrapped in a tissue, and he then says, “She actually just snuck out and gave me a little bit of her hair from her comb…,” Paul tells the cameras. “It means a lot that it’s actually something, it’s her hair. It’s very sweet of her to do something like that for me. I’ll make sure I pack it in here.”
Paul and his mother head off to the airport, where Paul will make his first journey to see Karine, his future wife.
