Aaron Rodgers joined the Green Bay Packers through the 2005 NFL draft. Backing up Hall of Famer Brett Favre, the young quarterback had big shoes to fill in 2008. As the California native shined on-field and in interviews, he became a fan-favorite among Wisconsinites. Unfortunately, after 16 seasons as a Packer, Rodgers and the team have exited the honeymoon phase.

As rumors swirl and speculation mounts that No. 12 could leave the green and gold, many point the finger at his new fiancée, Shailene Woodley.

Aaron Rodgers’ future in Green Bay is uncertain

Despite coming off of an MVP season, Rodgers seems anything but secure in his NFL career. Rumors began after the star privately voiced frustrations with the team. Others pointed to the fact that Rodgers had been fairly noncommittal in interviews regarding his long-term future with the Packers, despite his contract extension through 2023.

Since the initial detective work of skeptics, Rodgers’ teammates and associates of Rodgers have come forward with ambiguous statements to add fuel to the fire.

Needless to say, fans have been losing their (cheese)heads. The Packers have made a point to voice public support for Rodgers and their interest in keeping him. Still, some fear it may be too little, too late. After all, what is a football team without a quarterback they can trust?

Some fans blame Rodgers’ fiancée, Shailene Woodley

One thing we know for sure: Until we have a concrete answer, the internet will provide more than enough theories to entertain us. Unfortunately, some conspiratorial cheeseheads place Rodgers’ fiancée Shailene Woodley at fault. The actor, known for starring in films like Divergent and The Spectacular Now, has become the “villain” in this sports drama.

Some point out that Rodgers’ bombshell engagement news came just briefly before this latest reveal. ESPN’s Alyssa Lang took to Twitter to quip that Californian actor was likely put off by Wisconsin’s notoriously cold winters. Still, Rodgers started out in California as well and seemed to adjust.

One user lamented the fact that society seems ready to place blame on a woman. Her tweet read, “Shailene Woodley is trending on Twitter because Green Bay fans are blaming her for Aaron Rodgers being a diva. He’s always been a diva.”

The true culprit seems to lie in contracts… and a QB curse?

No matter your stance on Rodgers’ relationship, plenty of explanations exist that make a bit more sense than blaming Woodley. It seems like Rodgers’ initial frustrations came when the Packers traded up a few spots to claim Jordan Love.

The Utah quarterback will likely be his replacement when Rodgers retires. But the current star couldn’t help but take it as a snub. The franchise’s focus on a new QB, over a player who could work with their current talent, could be what costs them Rodgers.

Sources like Sporting News note that the Packers’ other franchise quarterbacks, Brett Favre and Bart Starr, stayed with the team for 16 seasons. If Rodgers departs now, he’d have just reached his 16-season quote as well.

If you’re looking for something to blame, we point you to Rodgers himself. But if that’s not good enough, take it out on the 16-season curse — not Woodley.
