‘Miss Americana’ tells the story of Taylor Swift’s journey creating ‘Lover’

Miss Americana pulled back the curtain on Swift’s life. The documentary allowed fans to see how the country-turned-pop-singer created the Lover album. Swift’s film also explores her gaining the courage to open up about her mother’s cancer. Plus, Miss Americana showed Swift’s decision to become more vocal about her political stance.

Miss Americana also introduced the world to a new song, “Only The Young.” The end-credits song of her documentary highlight Swift’s feelings about the 2018 midterm elections.

“I didn’t know where it would end up,” Swift told Variety in 2020, continuing:

But I did think that it would be better for it to come out at a time that it could maybe hopefully stoke some fires politically and maybe engage younger people to form their own views, break away from the pack, and not feel like they need to vote exactly the same way that people in their town are voting.

The documentary about Swift’s life premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020. More of Swift’s fans enjoyed Miss Americana when it debuted on Netflix. But because of the documentary’s brief run in theaters, it is eligible for two Oscar categories: Best Documentary Feature Oscar and Best Original Song category for the end credits song.

According to Forbes, since Sir Elton John took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” in 2020, Swift is more likely to win in the song vertical than the documentary award.

Taylor Swift has been snubbed at the Grammys before

Swift is no stranger to being ignored at industry award ceremonies. Despite Lover‘s anticipated success, the 2020 Grammys snubbed the singer for Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Those weren’t the only categories Swift was nominated for but didn’t win. Swift was also eligible to win for Song of the Year, Best Solo Pop Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album last year and lost.

Swift’s lack of appearance at the 2020 Grammy’s raised some speculation. But as Swift has become known to do, she focused on her five American Music Awards nominations. Now, all eyes are on Swift’s 2021 Oscar nomination.

Despite her acting roles in movies like Valentine’s Day and The Giver, Swift has never been nominated at the Academy Awards. Many fans think her best chances of being selected for an Oscar would be in the Best Original Song category. That’s why many are hopeful Swift will finally get her Oscar nomination in 2021.

Taylor Swift isn’t nominated for any Oscars in 2021

Much to the dismay of Swift’s fans, Miss Americana and “Only the Young” are not nominated for any Academy Awards. The 93rd Oscars were originally supposed to broadcast on Feb. 28, but the Academy pushed back the ceremony because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic pushing back the release of entertainment and closing theaters. The rescheduled Oscars ceremony will take place on Apr. 25, 2021.
