If you’ve opened TikTok recently, you’ve probably seen a “good soup” video. Ironically, most of these videos have nothing to do with soup at all. The audio trend originates from a line Adam Driver delivers in Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls.

Driver’s character Adam Sackler says “Good soup” while consuming soup at a diner. The videos surrounding the trend are often comical, but the Girls scene “Good soup” is pulled from is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the HBO series.

‘Good soup’ trend on TikTok explained

If you look under the sound for this trend on TikTok, you’ll find more than 265,000 videos. Most of them are food-related, but some have nothing to do with food, let alone soup. The majority feature TikTok users encountering a liquid (or food in some cases) and reenacting Driver’s OK hand gesture while miming the words “good soup.”

Hannah Horvath and Adam Sackler’s breakup scene from ‘Girls’ is where ‘good soup’ originated

Girls debuted on HBO in April 2012. The series ran for six seasons and explored the lives of four 20-something women living, working, and dating in New York City. Think of it like Sex and the City for millennial women.

The “good soup” audio is pulled from episode 8 of the final season of Girls, “What Will We Do This Time About Adam?” Throughout the series, Hannah (Dunham) has an on-again-off-again relationship with Adam (Driver). Eventually, the two start seeing other people. But when Hannah gets pregnant by another man who wants nothing to do with the baby, Adam comes back into her life.

In the Girls scene, Adam and Hannah spend a day roaming New York City and plan to raise the baby together. From finding artist housing to where to buy a crib — fear not, Hannah, Adam can build one — it seems like Hannah’s baby is going to bring the couple together for good this time.

But in the episode’s final moments, amidst a discussion about possibly getting married, the mood shifts. After offering to handle the grocery shopping if Hannah handles the bills, the couple pauses, and Hannah’s eyes fill with tears. Slowly, the realization that this will never work hits Adam, and the two change the subject.

“What’s the rest of your night look like?” he asks. “I’m gonna go to my house and write and then probably go to sleep, you?” Hannah replies.

“I guess I’m gonna grocery shop,” Adam adds, his voice cracking. Then, he takes a bite of his soup and delivers the now-iconic line.

Driver’s line from Girls might be what’s trending right now on TikTok. But there are several other Driver-inspired trends on the app.

For instance, there’s a mashup of audio clips featuring famous Driver lines like “You’re supposed to feed the rats on schedule!” (from an episode of Law and Order) and “Blow that piece of junk out of the sky!” (Driver’s role as Kylo Ren in Star Wars).
