When Prince Harry and Meghan got their rescue dog

When Meghan moved to the U.K. shortly before marrying Harry her little Beagle, Guy, went with her. But she was forced to give up her older dog, a Labrador-German Shepherd mix named Bogart. After saying their vows on May 19, 2018, the prince and former Suits star adopted a dog together.

It was reported that the addition to their family was a black Labrador but no other information about the pup was released to the public. Now what they call their canine is a mystery no more.

People noted that the name, which was revealed in the biography Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family by journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, is Pula.

The pup’s name has a special meaning

There is a very special reason behind why they chose to give their pooch that name.

Pula is the official currency of Botswana, a country Harry and Meghan both love and is a place they visited together when they first started dating.

They’ve shown a number of times how dear the African nation is to them. The center gem of the engagement ring Harry designed for his bride is from there. And in 2019, Meghan surprised her husband by camping out under the stars just like did on their first trip to Botswana.

“Meghan recreated their Botswana camping adventures in their backyard,” a source told People at the time. “It’s a place that means so much to them — and to Harry in particular — so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner, and recreated Botswana where they fell in love.”

Harry and Meghan aren’t the first royals to try and keep their pup’s name under wraps.

Back in 2012, Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge tried to keep the name of their dog a secret. They were pressed and after a few months decided to reveal that the black English cocker spaniel’s name is Lupo.

The name which means “wolf” in Italian has a special connection to Kate’s side of the family. According to Vanity Fair, the surname of the duchess’ paternal great-grandmother was “Lupton.”
