Cam Watkins joins Simone in the ‘All American’ spinoff series

Per Deadline, actor Mitchell Edwards will reprise his role as Cam Watkins in the spinoff series, All American: Homecoming. Also, the 28-year-old actor will serve as a series regular. In All American, Edwards’ character was Spencer James’ (Daniel Ezra) nemesis on the football team. However, they soon become friends in the series.

Now that he’s a recent graduate of South Crenshaw High, he will be a freshman student at Bringston University on All American: Homecoming. According to the CW, Cam is the same charming yet extremely cocky pain in the butt we loved to hate on, but a shocking turn of fate early in season one will have both us and Cam himself reevaluating who he really is inside and out.”

All American: Homecoming follows Simone Hicks (Geffri Maya), an aspiring tennis player from Beverly Hills, and a baseball prodigy named Damon Sims (Peyton Alex Smith). As young college athletes, they try to navigate the college sports world while attending Bringston University. While attempting to achieve greatness, both college athletes must endure the trials and tribulations of young adulthood.

All American executive producer Nkechi Okoro Carroll will serve as a writer on the spinoff series. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Caroll shared that she wanted young viewers to be exposed to the HBCU experience. While growing up, her only exposure to that world was through Black sitcoms such as A Different World – the Cosby Show spinoff centered around students attending Hillman College.

“This is my way of hoping I can introduce the HBCU experience and widen the horizon for our youth as a whole,” Carroll explained. “I’m completely surrounded by people who went to HBCUs, and [they have this] sense of finding themselves and finding a place where they felt permission to be whatever version of Black they were and really explore what that means.”
