‘All American’ showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll teases what’s to come

Ahead of the All American Season 4 premiere, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll sat down with TVLine and teased what’s in store for the new season. Even though she couldn’t reveal much detail, Carroll shared that the fourth season will “fill in the blanks” for what happened in the previous season.

To recap, Coop (played by Bre-Z) got shot by Mo (Erica Peeples). Meanwhile, Layla (Greta Onieogou) might be in danger with Carrie (Anna Lore), who became obsessed with her. Then, Asher (Cody Christian) has a heart condition that prevents him from playing football ever again. Finally, the state championship is underway, with South Crenshaw High and Beverly going head-to-head for the trophy.

So, what is going to happen next for the characters? Well, Carroll promised fans would get answers in the season premiere. “This is not going to be a season-long guessing game of where things ended up after the cliffhangers. Those questions will be answered in the first episode.”

Also, the showrunner revealed All American Season 4 serves as a “rebirth” for the main characters. “We will see a ripple effect through a number of characters as they are changed and their directions pivot – and maybe even life priorities change as a result of the cliffhangers.”

Based on the trailer, it seems Spencer (Daniel Ezra) may be considering a career change. For example, Darnell (Da’Vinchi) says he’s “too smart” to throw away a scholarship. In the previous season, Spencer scored a football scholarship to college.

So, will Spencer give up football for good? Even though Carroll didn’t give any spoilers, she teased fans will see a more “grown” version of Spencer James. She went on to say that he is “learning to put his oxygen mask on first” before helping others.

“He’s notorious for feeling survivor’s guilt for the blessings he has in his life,” Carroll told TVLine. “But, we’re also dealing with a Spencer – who’s grown since then, who’s been in therapy.”
