There’s no denying it — we’re living in an era of ‘00s nostalgia. The Jonas Brothers are back, shows like Charmed and Roswell are getting reboots, and there have even been rumors that low-rise jeans are coming back in style (but please, for all our sake’s, we hope this one isn’t true). Oh, and Disney darlings Aly and AJ Michalka are in the midst of a serious comeback.
Beginning with 2017’s EP Ten Years, the sister singer-songwriter duo has offered up a fresh, electric sound that speaks to their now grown-up millennial audience. But with everything new they have going on, are they interested in revisiting the past? Here’s what they had to say when interviewed by Showbiz Cheat Sheet at the WundaBar Pilates event in Los Angeles.
Remember Cow Belles? Let us remind you.
Back in 2006, Aly and AJ were both pop stars with two albums under their belts at Hollywood Records, as well as burgeoning actresses. While AJ had landed a few recurring gigs on series such as The Guardians and Oliver Beene, Aly starred in the Disney Channel sitcom Phil of the Future.
Naturally, they were excellent choices for a Disney Channel Original Movie, which were all the rage back then. They starred in Cow Belles as a pair of spoiled sisters forced to work on their father’s dairy farm. The TV flick was a popular one and earned the real-life duo quite a few new fans.
They recently revealed a sequel is possible
With Raven-Symoné back on Disney Channel playing the character that made her famous, it seems like any kind of revival is possible these days. Hilary Duff hasn’t scoffed at the idea of a Lizzie McGuire Movie sequel, and Miley Cyrus even embraced her Hannah Montana look recently, invoking rumors of a reboot. Aly & AJ aren’t opposed to doing the same with Cow Belles.
Speaking to ET in May, Aly said, “That is something we’re trying to make maybe happen. She added, “we’ve actually talked about it, developing a reboot with Disney.” They confirmed this when speaking with Showbiz Cheat Sheet in June 2019.
What would happen in Cow Belles 2?
The Michalka sisters don’t know exactly what would happen if they revisited the characters of Taylor and Courtney Callum. But they’re open to many possibilities. “It really could go anywhere,” said AJ to Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“We don’t really have the design, the plot really set up yet. But I do think we could do a lot of fun things with the farm and seeing if the girls are still as involved as they used to be,” she continued.
“It definitely would be them older. It’s what, almost 15 years later? So I don’t know, maybe there’s kids involved,” said Aly. AJ agreed, adding, “Maybe our kids are learning life on the dairy farm.”
On nostalgia for their Disney era
Aly & AJ have come a long way in terms of their sound and the kind of music they make over the past decade. But they know that fans still connect with the songs they grew up with, so they play a mixture of new and old when performing.
“I have a really happy association with our old music because I know how much joy it’s brought fans over the years,” said AJ to Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “And to me, that brings us joy. Like when I see that people are excited to hear a song and we’re on stage, it just fuels our fire. I love that.”
