‘American Idol’: Everything We Know About Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe Dating

American Idol made its big return to television and it had a pretty interesting finale. The season came down to Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, and Gabby Barrett in the top three. Barrett was then the first to be kicked out of the competition, and some fans were very angry about this.

But the drama didn’t exactly end there. Hutchinson and Poppe then revealed that they have been keeping a secret from the viewers. They are dating! The judges looked surprised as well.

So why did they keep it a secret and how does Hutchinson feel about losing to his girlfriend (page 5)? Here are seven things to know about their relationship.

The final two contestants announced they started dating with 15 minutes left in the show. “Well Maddie is my pal and I’ve known her since the beginning of Hollywood week. And she actually happens to be my girlfriend,” said Hutchinson.

The couple then performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” together and was surprised with a trip to Hawaii. After it was announced that it was Poppe who won, Hutchinson celebrated her win on Twitter.

“MY GIRLFRIEND WON AMERICAN IDOL!!! No one deserved it more than you babe. I am honored to know you and even more honored to call you mine. Don’t forget about me. I love you ❤️” he tweeted.

2. The two might have duets in the future

The couple seems open to doing more duets in the future. When asked about it, Hutchinson said “I mean, if she’ll have me. She’s the superstar now.”

It’s tough competing against a significant other with the stakes so high, but Poppe revealed the couple was hoping to make it to the final two.

We really wished that this could happen and just that it happened,” she told ET “I’m just so happy, so on top of the world, that I can’t even believe this is my life, so it’s pretty amazing.”

4. Hutchinson said he didn’t want to ‘exploit’ their relationship

The couple waited until the very last minute to announce their relationship for a reason.

It was one of those things where I didn’t want it to affect anything,” Hutchinson told ET. “And I didn’t want to exploit my feelings for her ‘cause they’re very, very real. Once voting was over, I was like, ‘Shoot, I want the world to know.’”

5. He also said it wasn’t challenging to lose to Poppe

It doesn’t seem like the runner-up is sad about the loss. “I mean, it was honestly, it wasn’t as challenging as you might think,” he told ET “When I looked over at Maddie, I was like, ‘I win either way.’ I really do. I don’t feel any type of bitter loss at all. I’m just so happy for her.”
