Many things have changed since Sex and the City. The revival show And Just Like That reflects that, and fans are concerned about one main character’s health.

‘And Just Like That…’ shows Miranda making a big change

Sex and the City fans found out what the familiar characters are doing after the pandemic. After the Muslim ban, Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) quit her job in law and enrolled back in school.

The And Just Like That… premiere episode “Hello It’s Me” showed Miranda shaking off her nerves by going to a bar. She had to wait for the bar to open at 11 a.m. to get a glass of Chablis, then she went to class. Miranda later went to Lily Goldenblatt’s (Cathy Ang) piano recital and brought a glass of wine to enjoy while watching it.

All the characters came together for a funeral in the episode “Little Black Dress.” Miranda ordered a bourbon and drank it before she spoke in the ceremony. Fans believed this could be a sign of something bigger.

Some ‘And Just Like That…’ fans think Miranda might be addicted

Fans noticed Miranda’s relationship with alcohol in the first two episodes. One person wrote on Reddit, “She was drunk in the classroom after leaving the bar, drunk at the funeral, drunk at the piano recital, etc.”

One fan replied, “You can be a functioning alcoholic… It’s clearly a ‘started drinking more in lockdown’ plot line that is IMO quite realistic?”

Someone else theorized, “I mean, Miranda said she quit her job as a partner at a law firm when the Muslim ban happened, which is major, and then she decided to switch careers during the pandemic, so clearly she’s having a stress-response existential crisis with everything that’s happened over the past few years and started drinking to cope.”

Other fans think Miranda is fine

Some fans disagreed that Miranda’s drinking could be a sign of addiction. “Eh, a real drinker or alcoholic doesn’t just get drunk off 1 glass of Chablis. You’d need more than just a glass of wine. Plus you’d plan to have it, like bring wine along in a water bottle of [sic] mug. One glass here or there isn’t enough for someone who wants to keep a buzz going. Also alcohol abuse isn’t always = to alcoholic.”

Another person wrote, “This show has always had a heavy dose of booze in it. Someone is always drinking.”

It looks like fans remain torn whether these scenes are a sign of an issue, or normal for the show. Fans will have to wait and see if it’ll go anywhere.
