Angela Simmons details escaping an abusive relationship

Simmons began opening up about being in an abusive relationship in 2018. She told the hosts of The Breakfast Club that she ended her last relationship because she was not being respected. In an episode of Growing Up Hip Hop, Simmons described the abuse as one of the worst experiences of her life.

During a recent chat with Hollywood Unlocked, Simmons explained how hard it was for her to come to the realization that she ended up in such a situation.

“You never know that you’re going to be that person until you’re in it, and then once you’re in it, I feel like you make excuses to stay,” she said.

Simmons went on to explain that speaking to other women about her situation while she felt “stuck” in it was the first step in her getting the motivation to leave.

“You have to find someone who you can go to and talk to because if you’re stuck in it alone, you’re stuck in it,” she says. “It’s a tough place to be in.”

The Growing Up Hip Hop star says it’s important to understand all forms of abuse. “Physical abuse is not the only thing that’s abusive,” she notes. “Mental abuse is very real and can put you in isolation and I think it’s really important that you don’t get stuck there…I couldn’t believe I was that girl and I was going through that. I just couldn’t have ever imagined it. But, it was definitely a tough space for me to be in but I found my way out.”

She says coming forward with her story of survival is to help others escape their own situations of abuse and overcome them.

Court records reveal claims of domestic violence from Angela Simmons’ ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson

Simmons announced her pregnancy and engagement to Tennyson in 2016. She’d previously vowed to maintain her virginity until she married but says she met Tennyson and her plan changed.

Their son, Sutton Tennyson Jr., was born in September 2016. Simmons confirmed her and Tennyson’s split in December 2017. She opened up about the breakup in May 2018 on an episode of Growing Up Hip Hop

“I just got to a place where I felt like I wasn’t happy, and I tried, and I tried, and I tried and I wanted it to work because the last thing I wanted to do was not be together with the person I had my child with,” she admitted in a confessional. “God had another plan for me.”

Tennyson was killed in November 2018. Just days after his death, Page Six reported Tennyson and Simmons were engulfed in a child custody case. The report claims that four days prior to Tennyson’s murder, he and Simmons appeared in a Manhattan courtroom to discuss child support and a visitation agreement.

From those findings, Simmons reportedly received temporary custody of their son amid filing for an order of protection against Tennyson after their split, citing domestic violence. Still, Simmons says Tennyson was a great father.
