When Timeless was canceled at the end of its second season, fans fought hard to get their beloved show back. But rather than give the series a third season, NBC opted to wrap up its story with a two-hour TV movie.

Now, two years after its cancellation, fans are still campaigning to see their favorite time-traveling heroes back in action. Luckily, showrunner Eric Kripke just hinted that another Timeless movie could really happen.

What is ‘Timeless’ about

Timeless, which premiered on NBC in 2016, features the beloved time-traveling team of Rufus (Malcolm Barrett), Lucy (Abigail Spencer), and Wyatt (Matt Lanter). It is centered around a top-secret government program focused on stopping terrorists from using a time machine to disrupt and alter history to their advantage.

The series highlights momentous events from history, including the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the Hindenburg disaster, and the Appollo 11 mission. Along with its depictions of historical events, the show highlights how those real-life moments have shaped the world we know today.

‘Timeless’ got two seasons and a movie

Despite its cult following, NBC canceled Timeless after Season 2, leaving viewers with a nailbiting cliffhanger. But when fans flooded social media with the #SaveTimeless and #RenewTimeless hashtags, executives decided to give the series a TV movie to wrap up its story.

The movie, which aired at the end of 2018, brought closure to the series’ unfinished storylines. But it also left the door open for more. At the time, Timeless executive producer Eric Kripke revealed that the writers and showrunners left the story open-ended on purpose.

“There’s a certain amount of shocking turns, and we tried to let it build to something and provide a certain amount of closure, and give you a sense of where these characters go,” Kripke told Collider in an interview. “We tried to put a period at the end of the sentence, but not so much that the door isn’t open for further adventures, down the road.”

Eric Kripke says another movie could happen

It’s been over a year since the Timeless movie aired, but fans haven’t forgotten about the series. From time to time, the self-proclaimed “Clockstoppers” will take to social media to share their hashtags and campaign for another season. In a recent interview with Collider, Kripke said that while the show will probably never be picked up for a third season, it doesn’t mean that it’s dead.

“Nothing’s completely over, nothing ever really dies,” said Kripke. “I don’t know if Timeless is completely and totally gone forever. I don’t think there’s going to be a series — we really tried to get someone else to pick it up and I just don’t think that’s gonna happen.”

Kripke noted that while fans may never get new seasons of the series, they could potentially get another TV movie sometime in the future.

“There is always the possibility of more TV movies,” said Kripke. “I know the actors are game to do it. Shawn (executive producer) and I, I can’t say we’ve talked about it a lot, but we’ve chatted back and forth in emails and said, ‘One of these days we should try and get another Timeless TV movie going.’  We don’t have any immediate plans for it. Everyone’s busy and working on all their various projects. One day it might happen.”
